Southwark Council has introduced a new introductory tenancy scheme for all new tenants as part of a wider drive to crack down on anti-social behaviour in the borough.
All new tenants will be put on a 12 month tester tenancy to make sure they behave in an acceptable way. If there are no problems at the end of the year, tenants will be switched to a normal secure tenancy. If the tenant does not keep to the conditions required, the council can terminate the tenancy.
Councillor Beverley Bassom, Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Housing, said:
"Tenants sticking to the letter of the tenancy agreement don't deserve to suffer bad behaviour from a minority of tenants. New tenants who don't keep in line will feel the full force of the law and even face eviction if needs be."
