World famous Bermondsey-born actor Sir Michael Caine has lavished praise on the council's new blue plaque scheme.
The scheme was introduced by the Liberal Democrat council in partnership with local newspaper 'Southwark News'. The council has put up 20 blue plaques across the borough to celebrate and mark Southwark's rich history and culture, with local residents voting for who they think should be honoured - a first in Britain. The competition was such a success it will be run again next year.
Michael Caine, on a recent visit to his birthplace where the Council has erected a plaque in his honour, said that the unveiling was "..better than winning an Oscar."
