Lib Dem run Southwark Council's plans for the regeneration of Elephant and Castle have received overwhelming public support following a three-month consultation held last summer.
80% of respondents to a questionnaire sent to every home in the Elephant & Castle area gave either strong or moderate support for the regeneration plans. Every aspect of the proposed redevelopment; from improved leisure facilities and a new transport interchange, to public space and a revived town centre, got the support of the vast majority of residents. Crucially, the council's housing plans to build new local homes for all Heygate Estate residents was supported by 71% of respondents.
Jane Salmon, local resident and campaigner said:
"The results of these surveys is fantastic news and shows that the Lib Dem council is heading in the right direction with their regeneration plans. This has been one of the most comprehensive consultations ever undertaken by the Council and it's not over yet."
"Working with local ward councillors, Cathy Bowman and Neil Watson we will be making sure that everyone receives accurate and up to date information as the plans develop, and have the chance to speak to council officers when they want."
