An opinion poll in the Evening Standard has shown that the race to be London's next mayor could be a close run thing between Southwark's hard working Liberal Democrat MP Simon Hughes and current mayor Ken Livingstone.
Before campaigning had even started, the poll showed support for Ken Livingstone on 33%, the Conservatives on 27% and Simon Hughes on 24%. The Liberal Democrat score was double what they scored at the last London mayoral elections in 2000 and the Liberal Democrat vote always tends to go up during election campaigns. A recent MORI poll also showed Lib Dem support in London at 24% - double the 2000 score.
The local GLA constituency, Lambeth and Southwark, is also a top target for the Liberal Democrats. Walworth councillor and Deputy Leader of Southwark Council, Caroline Pidgeon, is the Liberal Democrat prospective candidate.
