Surveys by the council's own contract monitoring teams have shown a big improvement in cleaning standards since the Liberal Democrat council agreed in spring 2003 to spend an extra £3.7 million on a new cleaning contract with record numbers of staff and new equipment. The time taken to remove abandoned vehicles has also been halved with a 32% reduction in dumped cars being set alight as a result.
Liberal Democrat Executive Member for the Environment, Councillor Richard Thomas (pictured), said "Almost 90% of the borough's streets are now cleaned to a satisfactory standard - up at least 70% on when Labour ran the council."
The new Liberal Democrat council has also put 1200 new litter bins on the borough's streets, given every street property a blue box to recycle their paper, installed 200 recycling points on council estates and is now expanding the door-to-door collections to include glass and cans from February 2004. Recycling rates in the borough have now hit a record high.
