Gary Glover congratulates Simon Hughes MP on his reselection
At a full meeting in Bermondsey on Thursday (29/7/04) Simon Hughes was reselected to fight the constituency for a record seventh time by the Executive of North Southwark & Bermondsey Liberal Democrats.
Simon was first elected to the North Southwark & Bermondsey seat 21 years ago in 1983 on a swing of 44.2% from Labour. This was and still remains the largest swing to the Liberal Democrats from Labour since the end of the Second World War.
Liberal Democrat constituency Chair Gary Glover said: "I am glad that both Simon has agreed to stand as our MP in the forthcoming General Election and that the constituency Party unanimously supported his nomination to continue as MP and fight the North Southwark & Bermondsey seat in 2005.
"Following on from the swings to the Liberal Democrats in both local and national elections over the past few months, this is a seat that the Labour Party will not relish fighting at the next general election."
Simon Hughes said: "I am grateful and proud to have been reselected by my constituency party to fight the seat for a record seventh time. I am more enthusiastic now about representing the people of North Southwark & Bermondsey than I have ever been.
"With our new Liberal Democrat Council the chance of delivering the better public services which the people of this historic borough is greater than ever in the six years ahead"
