Surrey Docks ward councillors, Lisa Rajan, David Hubber and Gavin O'Brien are calling on Barratts - the developers of the Downtown site in Rotherhithe - to reconsider their latest scheme, following an exhibition held locally last week.
"The proposals are unacceptable to us. The buildings are too high and too dense and we also have other serious concerns about building massing, transport, parking, ecology and access to the school. It was very clear from the reactions of the local people at the exhibition that many of them share our views and have strong objections to the plans." said Councillor Hubber, former chair of Southwark planning committee.
"We are urging Barratts to take local concerns on board and rethink their ideas - buildings of 5 storeys along Salter Road and 9 storeys by Redriff Primary School are completely inappropriate for this area. We pushed for the redesignation of the area to 'suburban' to prevent this type of high-rise development and Barratts are completely disregarding this. As ward councillors we intend to object strongly when these plans come to the Planning Committee, and we know local residents will object too" added Councillor Rajan.
