Lib Dem parliamentary spokesman for Camberwell & Peckham Richard Porter has today written to Harriet Harman MP, calling on her to support Lib Dem proposals for a vote in the House of Commons prior to the deployment of British troops in Iraq under American control. The Labour Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon announces in the House of Commons this afternoon that over 800 British troops will shortly be deployed to Iskandariya without allowing the House of Commons a vote.
Commenting on these moves, Lib Dem Parliamentary Candidate for Camberwell & Peckham Richard Porter said "The government have already taken us into an illegal war in Iraq, with thousands of innocent civilians and soldiers being slaughtered. By allowing this deployment without a vote in the commons only goes to show the arrogance of this current administration and their complete disregard for the parliamentary process.
"Harriet Harman supported the war under false pretences and she must now call on her own government to allow for a free vote in the House of Commons at the earliest opportunity".
