Cllr Nick Stanton, Lib Dem Leader of Southwark Council, has today written to the Secretary of State for Education and Skills, Ruth Kelly MP, to ask for her cooperation in finding a solution to the need for secondary school places in East Dulwich.
The letter follows the Education Secretary's much-publicised visit to East Dulwich with the Prime Minister on 25th October to launch the Government's White Paper on education.
Cllr Stanton's letter seeks to engage the Government in the difficult process of finding a sponsor for the proposed academy in the area, to be created by bringing Waverley Girls School and a new boys school under one banner.
Commenting, Cllr Stanton said:
"The Prime Minister and Education Secretary hit the headlines by highlighting the shortage of school places in East Dulwich. Now it is time for them to take responsibility and become part of the solution.
"The Council has made all the decisions it can to progress the exciting scheme for a new academy. The ball is now firmly in DfES's court to find a suitable sponsor and I hope Ruth Kelly will push the plans further.
"Education in Southwark is massively improving under our administration and the Government should get on board and help us roll out that success to every child in the borough."
