Lisa Rajan and the Surrey Dock Lib Dem team have welcomed the planning inspector's decision
Southwark Liberal Democrats have warned London Mayor Ken Livingstone that he must not overturn the decision to designate the Rotherhithe peninsula and East Dulwich as "suburban" to protect them from high-rise developments.
Over the last two years Southwark's Lib Dem councillors have been refusing the Mayor's plans for 6-storey buildings in areas like East Dulwich, Surrey Docks and Rotherhithe.
That decision has now been upheld by the Planning Inspector in his draft report on Southwark's 10-year Unitary Development Plan (UDP). But the Mayor could still ask the Deputy Prime Minister to overturn the decision.
Commenting, Cllr Lisa Rajan, Lib Dem ward member for Surrey Docks, said: "I am delighted that the planning inspector has upheld our decision to designate the Rotherhithe peninsula and East Dulwich as suburban. It is vital that we maintain the very distinct suburban characters of these areas and are able to guard against inappropriate development. The Lib Dems will be defending our decision against any move by Labour's Mayor to overturn it."
Cllr Richard Thomas, Lib Dem Executive Member for the Environment, added: "Local residents want us to protect their communities from large-scale, high-rise building and the planning inspector's decision is a real victory for them. We cannot allow Labour's Mayor to let developers ride roughshod over the wishes of Southwark residents. The local Labour Party is so in hock to the Mayor and the Government that they have failed to stand up for Southwark's needs."
