Southwark's Liberal Democrat Executive last night agreed to take forward a plan to meet the Government's Decent Homes standard by 2010, without having to sell off the council's housing stock.
The council's consultation with residents has shown that stock retention is the preferred option for the majority of tenants.
Throughout the process the Liberal Democrats have upheld the overwhelming desire of Southwark's tenants to remain as council tenants, against the desire of the Labour Government for councils to sell off their stock.
The Executive has also agreed to prioritise any shortfall in money for Decent Homes in the council's capital budget, which is yet to be allocated, should a contingency plan be needed.
Commenting, Cllr Beverley Bassom, Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Housing Management, said:
"It has been a long and difficult process, but thanks to the hard work of officers and the residents and members of the Options Appraisal Working Group we know that Southwark will be able to meet the demands of the Government's Decent Homes target within the council's own resources.
"New measures introduced by the Labour Government continue to put increasing pressure on councils to sell off their housing stock, but Southwark Liberal Democrats are committed to upholding tenants' desire to remain as council tenants."
