Nick Clegg and James Barber outside East Dulwich Police Station
Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Nick Clegg MP, has added his support to the Southwark Lib Dem campaign to open East Dulwich police station 24 hours a day.
He met with East Dulwich candidates Cllr Richard Thomas and James Barber and local campaigners at the station to discuss how the limited opening hours affect how safe the community feels.
Mr Clegg said:
"Shutting the doors of the police station at 10pm is sending completely the wrong message to local residents."
"It is ridiculous for Ken Livingstone to talk about more police, when East Dulwich residents don't have access to their local station throughout the night."
"Opening the station 24 hours a day, like other stations, will help people feel safer and encourage people to report crimes such as domestic violence and hate crimes, which are often unreported."
"It's clear that only the Lib Dems can beat Labour in East Dulwich and send a strong message to the Labour Mayor that we shouldn't have to chose between police on the streets and access to police stations."
Lib Dem candidate for East Dulwich, James Barber, said:
"I am delighted that Nick Clegg is supporting our campaign to open the police station round the clock. Lib Dems want local residents to feel safer in their homes and on the streets at all times of the day or night."
