Southwark Liberal Democrats today exposed Labour's crime campaign meltdown ahead of next week's local elections.
Following national revelations over Labour's incompetence at the Home Office, embarrassed Home Secretary Charles Clarke had to cancel a Labour campaign visit to Southwark on Wednesday evening.
The meeting went ahead with Home Office Minister Hazel Blears, but the Lib Dems can reveal that fewer than a dozen people turned up as the Labour Party's own members and supporters show they have now completely lost faith in Labour.
The national crisis at the Home Office has also revealed Labour's double-standards as Labour ministers are refusing to name the hundreds of foreign criminals who they accidentally let out of prison instead of deporting, after both the Prime Minister and Home Secretary demanded that Southwark name the recipients of ASBOs.
Commenting, Cllr Nick Stanton, Liberal Democrat leader of Southwark Council, said:
"Labour's entire campaign has been based on the myth that they can be trusted on law and order. Now they have been exposed as being incompetent and hypocritical."
"No wonder just a handful of people turned up to hear Hazel Blears speak - it is clear that Southwark residents have completely lost any remaining faith in Labour, just like the rest of the country."
"Labour's arrogance, as seen over the issue of 'naming and shaming', is deplorable and will not be tolerated by the electorate any longer."
