Thank you to everyone who voted for the Liberal Democrat team in the council elections. Following the elections the make-up of the council is:
Liberal Democrats - 28
Labour - 28
Conservative - 6
Green 1
The Liberal Democrat highlight of the night occurred in In East Dulwich where James Barber, Jonathan Mitchell and Richard Thomas pulled off a spectacular victory, overturning a large Labour majority to become the first Liberal Democrat councillors in the south of the borough.
Local residents re-elected Liberal Democrat councillors in the following wards: Cathedrals, Chaucer, Grange, Newington, Riverside, Rotherhithe, South Bermondsey and Surrey Docks.
The Liberal Democrats were also within 50 votes of gaining a seat in Peckham Rye and 287 votes from gaining a seat in Brunswick Park. However Labour gained the former Liberal Democrat ward of Livesey and two out of three Lib Dem seats in East Walworth.
"I'd like to thank everyone who turned out on election day to support the Liberal Democrats' positive plan for Southwark," said Liberal Democrat council group leader Nick Stanton. "All 28 Liberal Democrat councillors look forward to serving local residents over the next four years."
