Simon Hughes MP and Cllr Denise Capstick collecting support against NHS cuts
Local Lib Dems stepped up their campaign against New Labour's £20 million cuts to Southwark's health service. Along with local volunteers, Lib Dems collected hundreds of signatures from local people outside Bermondsey Tube Station. The petition calls on the Health Secretary, Patricia Hewitt, to stop unfairly penalising Southwark's Health Services - which are having to pay the price for Government mismanagement and other health trusts' overspending.

Denise Capstick, Lib Dem Executive Member for Health said. "This petition has been a great success, we have received a lot of support. However, the campaign for decent services does not end here. We will be back out on the streets again and have launched an on-line petition, which people can sign up to on the internet."
Simon Hughes MP was also out campaigning: "When cuts are announced it's often the little known, yet crucial services which are axed. We have seen how the push to cut corners has meant that wards are no longer as clean as they should be, making it more likely that infections spread within hospitals and bugs like the deadly MRSA develop."
