Councillor Jeff Hook, Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Community Safety, is seeking urgent reassurance that Southwark will not lose Police Officers in the light of Government plans to transfer front line Police to immigration duties.
Liberal Democrats in Parliament have discovered that of the 800 extra immigration officers announced by Home Secretary John Reid, 440 will in fact be front line Police Officers taken off the beat and transferred to immigration duties.
"Southwark cannot afford to lose any of its current contingent of Police Officers," said Cllr Jeff Hook. "We are looking for a boost in numbers rather than a cut."
"Whatever the national priorities of the moment, local people have a genuine worry about the amount of gun and knife related crime in Southwark. Local Police should be focussed on tackling these problems - as they are now - and not dragged away to deal with immigration issues in Dover or Portsmouth."
