Southwark Council's Liberal Democrats have called on London Mayor Ken Livingstone to exercise restraint over the tax is imposing on Southwark residents. The increase in the amount of council tax demanded by the Mayor for next year is set to be 13.1% including the Olympic precept.
"The system of Council tax is massively unfair and hits poorer households and pensioners the hardest," said Cllr Nick Stanton, Liberal Democrat Leader of Southwark Council. "But Mayor Ken's massive tax hike is adding insult to injury. He must restrain himself or the Government must step in and do so."
"Since Mayor Ken came to office in 2000, he has more than doubled his tax grab. He has produced an inflation busting budget every single year. He is a throwback to the Neanderthal days of Old Labour."
"The Liberal Democrats in Southwark have pledged to keep our council tax levels below the London average over the course of our administration. But local tax payers will be hit year after year by Ken's unchecked raid on their pockets."
"If Southwark Council behaved in this way then the Government would step in and stop us. Mayor Ken should not be able to exploit the Government's dependence on him to get away with this tax grab."
