Cllr Nick Stanton, Liberal Democrat Leader of Southwark Council, has slammed the Mayor of London for yet another above inflation rise in transport costs in the capital. The rises will hit both residents and visitors.
"Ken Livingstone seems determined to punish Southwark's residents for living in the capital and tourists for wishing to visit," said Cllr Nick Stanton.
"Those people paying cash fares, which includes most visitors, will see a hike of 33% for both tube and bus journeys to and from Southwark."
"The Oyster card continues to be the cheapest way of travelling and users will only see a rise if they make off-peak bus journeys. But at 25%, this rise is still way above the rate of inflation."
"But most visitors do not use Oyster cards. These rises will prove a real turn off for tourists and will hit the attractions of the South Bank the hardest. London continues to be the most expensive capital city to travel around in the world and the cash single fare on the tube is more than two and a half times the next highest (Tokyo)."
