A Labour member of Southwark Council has been exposed lying to the press over the process for the appointment of the new Director of Legal Services. His conduct has been labelled shameful by Council Leader Nick Stanton.
Labour Chief Whip Paul Bates got in touch with local newspapers to complain about the process of appointing the new Director of Legal Services for Southwark Council. He criticised the decision to use a dinner as part of the interview process. He also said that no Labour councillor was involved in the dinner.
It has now been revealed that the Labour Party on Southwark Council knew all along that a dinner was planned as part of the appointment process and raised no objections. It has also bee revealed that Labour Councillor Althea Smith attended the dinner.
"Councillor Bates has been caught lying in the most disgraceful manner," said Liberal Democrat Council Leader Nick Stanton. "It is typical of the Labour Party in Southwark that they should make stories up in order to try to discredit the Council."
"Cllr Bates behaviour is shameful and he should apologise to Council officers, the journalists he lied to and to his own colleague Cllr Althea Smith."
