Cllr Nick Stanton, Liberal Democrat Leader of Southwark Council, today attended the first meeting of a Commission established by Met Commissioner Ian Blair to discuss ways of combating gun and knife crime.
"Today I attended a Met Police Community Consultative meeting to review actions that are being taken on the issue of gun and knife crime and to raise issues that need to be addressed following the recent shootings in Peckham, Streatham and elsewhere," said Cllr Nick Stanton.
"Amongst other issues, I highlighted the problem that the Government's decent homes policy doesn't include money for improving community safety on estates. I also suggested that the Police and Council should encourage schools to use anti-violent crime programmes of the sort run by the Damilola Taylor Trust and the From Boyhood to Manhood Foundation."
"Further more, I highlighted the need for the Crown Prosecution Service and the court system to be more responsive to the impact of weapons and violent crime on communities such as Peckham when making decisions an matters such as bail and licensing."
