Cllr David Noakes, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson on Health and Social Care has spoken of his fear that a poor government grant settlement for boroughs like Southwark will force cuts to social care services.
Speaking at last week's Council Assembly, Cllr Noakes cited the increasing costs of caring for adults with physical, mental and learning difficulties and the unrecognised financial support the Council are giving to asylum seekers under the National Assistance Act. He also spoke of his intention of working with residents, local organisations and other London Councils to raise awareness of this situation.
Cllr Noakes has written to the Secretary of State for Health seeking a meeting to discuss his concerns.
Speaking after the meeting Cllr David Noakes, said:
"The government is forcing us into a corner on this.
"Southwark is one of the few councils in London which still offers care to those with moderate needs, but this is at risk.
"The social care team has already made substantial efficiency savings.
"But with increasing demands and an effective budget cut over the next 3 years, we face a really desperate situation which will impact on the poorest and most vulnerable people in our society."
