Liberal Democrat Anood Al-Samerai last night won the Riverside ward by-election with an increased majority. The Liberal Democrats secured 1114 votes, Labour 691 and the Conservatives just 260.
Commenting, Cllr Anood Al-Samerai said:
"I am delighted by this result.
"It will be a privilege to work with Nick and Eliza to continue the work of improving our area.
"Local people have voted to continue the Lib Dem record of strong representation and investment in Southwark - I will not let them down."
Cllr Nick Stanton, Riverside ward councillor and leader of Southwark Council added:
"This is a great result for the people of Riverside - Anood will be a fantastic local councillor.
"Labour's negative campaign has backfired. Labour's backbenchers will rightly now be asking questions over choices made by their leader.
"Cllr John publicly forced his choice of candidate on his colleagues and said from day one that Labour would fight to win. Tonight he has been left with egg on his face."
