Southwark reaffirms its commitment to cross river tram

July 14, 2008 12:00 AM

Southwark's Council Assembly this week voted unanimously for a Liberal Democrat proposed motion reaffirming its commitment to the Cross River Tram. The tram will serve many of the most deprived areas of the borough and is an integral part of the major regeneration projects at Elephant and Castle and the Aylesbury Estate.

Commenting, Councillor Paul Noblet, Southwark's Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Regeneration, said:

"The tram is a vital part of the schemes at the Elephant and at Aylesbury. When I and colleagues visit City Hall in September we will be making the strongest possible case to make sure the Mayor gives this project the go-ahead."

Councillor Caroline Pidgeon AM, who seconded the motion and is also vice-chair of the GLA's Transport Committee, added:

"For too long south London boroughs, and particularly Southwark and Lambeth, have suffered from poor transport links. The Cross River Tram is an opportunity to boost many of our most deprived wards, and bring local people closer to jobs in central London."
