Liberal Democrat MP Simon Hughes today received assurances from Jack Straw that the Government will pay towards the multi-million pound cost of the Jean Charles de Menezes inquest.
The cost had been planned to fall upon the four London authorities of Southwark, Lambeth, Lewisham and Greenwich.
The commitment was made public in a Parliamentary answer to Simon Hughes, who is MP for North Southwark and Bermondsey.
Commenting, Simon Hughes said:
"At last Jack Straw has seen the justice of the Government helping to pay for the de Menezes inquest.
"It was simply unacceptable that an inquest of national and international importance, which cost millions of pounds, should have to be paid for by council taxpayers in the London boroughs near where de Menezes was killed.
"I hope the Government will now pay its fair share of the bill."
