Simon Hughes has today been briefed by a senior official of Thames Water on the very damaging burst to the huge 20-inch main under Tooley Street, Bermondsey in his constituency.
Mr Hughes is aware of the significant disruption this caused to domestic water pressures this morning - mercifully now ended - and the continuing major disruption to businesses along the riverside from London Bridge to Tower Bridge. This is the second major burst in this area in just over twelve months.
"I am relieved that Thames Water that they hope to have completed the repair to the main by the middle of the day tomorrow. There will then clearly be much disruption whilst the very busy part of Tooley Street is repair and there is a massive clear up for local businesses.
I have asked to be told how old this main is. If ever there was evidence of the need for pipes and infrastructure that were fit for purpose for modern demands, then this is it.
I send, to all the local businesses affected, my sympathy. If any of them believe there is any help I can give to them I hope they will urgently ask."
