Simon Hughes, Liberal Democrat MP for North Southwark and Bermondsey, has today written to GLA Labour member Val Shawcross to congratulate her on being selected to be the Labour candidate for Bermondsey and Old Southwark at the next election.
Simon said today:
'Ms Shawcross will be the eighth different Labour candidate in eight consecutive elections to stand for parliament in the northern part of Southwark. Obviously my supporters and I plan to make sure that her campaign succeeds no more than the last seven!'
'Liberal Democrat members of parliament win and hold our seats by hard work and a record of service to all the community all the year round. Like the growing number of my Liberal Democrat colleagues, I will continue to show that the job of representing our fantastic communities is for 365 days of the year and not just in the run up to elections.'
'My constituents know that I will support them week in and week out. My determination to stand up for individuals and groups within our community does not waiver - whether it is to take on the Labour government, the Conservative Mayor of London or the Greater London Authority, or the local Council. And local residents can give regular evidence to show how often our work and our campaigns succeed.'
'After twelve years of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown in Downing Street, Ms Shawcross will find it very hard to persuade people locally that Britain wants or needs another five years of Labour government. Liberal Democrats offer the best opportunity locally for a strong and campaigning MP - and for the policies our borough and our country need.'
