Paul Noblet, Lib Dem Surrey Docks ward councillor, today welcomed the first step in bringing home two 19th century statues to Rotherhithe.
The caryatid statues, sculpted by Henry Poole in 1897 for the former Rotherhithe Town Hall, were this week moved from their current home in Walworth as the first part of their journey back to Rotherhithe. Over the coming months the Council will be consulting with local resident groups to find a secure new home for the statues close to their former location on Lower Road.
Commenting, Cllr Noblet said:
"It's fantastic to see these statues coming back to Rotherhithe as they form part of the rich history of the area.
"The Council will be storing them securely until a new home for them can be found, and there will be discussions with local groups to decide where the statues will be placed so they can be put on display for everyone to enjoy."
