Southwark's opposition Liberal Democrats are calling on the council's administration to provide an Olympic legacy for the borough by completing the Southwark Park Athletic Centre project. The project would provide modern sports facilities - a refurbished running track, new five-a-side pitches and new larger changing facilities - but has had its planning permission overturned on a technicality.
The Lib Dems have submitted a motion to July's Council assembly calling for the early resolution of the planning issues to allow the project to be completed in time for 2012.
Liberal Democrat Culture and Leisure spokesman and former Olympic athlete, Cllr Columba Blango says:
"This project is Southwark's last chance to have a legacy from the London 2012 games. Funding is in place and the plans are set to go. All it requires is for the council to take speedy action to deal with the planning technicalities.
"Labour need to understand the urgency of sorting out the planning permission. If they don't then Southwark will be the loser and there will be no lasting benefit from the Olympics for local people."
