Southwark tenants are facing a whopping £200,000 bill to pay for Labour's new housing director. The fat cat salary package comes just as public spending is being squeezed to pay for the huge public debt built up by the previous Labour government.
Commenting Liberal Democrat housing spokesperson, Cllr Linda Manchester, says:
"There are many better things the Council should spend tenants' money on. For example £200,000 a year would be enough to insulate 700 flats - keeping tenants warm and saving them money. This one salary would pay to decorate 800 disabled or elderly people's front rooms, or it could mean 1000 visits by the handy person to fit secure locks on front doors - helping to keep people safe in their homes.
"Labour's first act in administration was to award themselves a payrise, their second was to award the developers of Elephant and Castle a multi million pound boost to their profits and now their third act is to award a whopping fat cat salary and pension package to yet another public servant.
"I'm sure when Labour promised tenants 'warm, dry and safe' homes, they wouldn't have imagined that meant a warm, dry and safe luxury home for the director paid out of their hard earned rents."
