Southwark Liberal Democrats have hit out at Labour's decision at cabinet last night to move residents from Maydew House without guaranteeing their right of return. This is despite Labour's promise before the election that they would 'save' Maydew House from being sold.
Commenting, Cllr Paul Noblet, Liberal Democrat regeneration spokesperson said:
"I'm extremely concerned that Labour did not give Maydew tenants a cast iron guarantee that they will be able to return to their homes after any major works have taken place. Local tenants have told me that they believe Labour have already decided to privatise over 100 Council homes despite saying the opposite to get elected."
Simon Hughes MP, who had persuaded the council to further consult with residents, said:
"I am very disappointed that, despite hearing views of Maydew residents, Labour seem to have ignored them entirely. Labour seem determined to press ahead with the closure and sale of Maydew House. This is despite the pledge by the Labour candidate at the general election to do the opposite.
"There are also big questions about the offer for Maydew residents to have new homes at nearby Canada Water. These homes are already being let through the council's Homesearch service, before any Maydew resident has been awarded the chance to move in. This means Maydew tenants could lose out on suitable local properties.
I have made clear that I am opposed to selling off this block. Thousands of voters will be very angry if Labour now go ahead to and sell it."
