Liberal Democrats believe in local democracy and local residents making their own decisions. That's why we are proud we introduced Community Councils in Southwark - a way of giving local people a say over how money is spent in their area.
Sadly, the Labour-run council are determined to give local people less say about the future of their communities. They want to merge the 8 community council areas into 5. This would mean that residents on Bermondsey Street will have to attend the same meetings as people on Rotherhithe Street, and residents from the Aylesbury Estate with those from Southwark Street.
Labour also want to take planning decisions away from Community Councils. We believe that this completely destroys the principle of Community Councils and the local decision-making that comes with it.
I/We the undersigned oppose Labour Southwark's plans to merge Community Councils and take away their planning powers.
