Two inner London councils failed to fine any litterers after the government eased its covid rules and guidance, the Southwark Liberal Democrats disclosed on Friday.

Freedom of information (FOI) requests shows that Southwark and Westminster City Council failed to dole out any fines for littering between April-August 2022.

Greenwich and Camden Council were dishing out hundreds of fines per month in the same period.

While, Lambeth Council mostly gave out over a thousand per month in that time.

Southwark had 168 reports of littering between April and August 2022, although Westminster could not provide any corresponding data.

The government’s plan for “living with covid” entered its last stage on 1st April.

Commenting, Cllr Victor Chamberlain, Southwark Liberal Democrat Group Leader said: “Residents are sick of dirty London streets and councils not listening to their complaints. Some streets in Southwark are filthy. We should be showing pride in our capital, but instead these councils are letting waste pile up in our boroughs. Allowing litterers off the hook is, frankly, rubbish and has lost these authorities revenue that would have been useful in the cost-of-living emergency.”
