Councillor Rachel Bentley
Standing to be your MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark
About Rachel
A respected local voice for Bermondsey & Old Southwark
Hello, I'm Rachel Bentley and I am standing to be the next Liberal Democrat MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark.
I’ve lived in Bermondsey & Old Southwark for over ten years. I chose this area as my home because I love its wonderful combination of history, vibrancy and culture. Since settling in Bermondsey, I’ve actively participated in various charitable projects. I’ve mentored young people, taught financial literacy and helped deliver food during the Covid pandemic. I am a trustee of a charity that supports young people in Southwark to achieve their educational goals, and I provide emergency shelter to young people who are homeless.
I decided to enter politics to combat the incompetence and many scandals which have plagued Westminster. I am committed to restoring trust and integrity in public life.
Experience
I spent 16 years overseas, living and working in Japan, the USA and South Africa. In my professional work, I’ve advised governments, families, businesses and charities on many matters, including job creation and land use. In May 2022, I was elected as a councillor for our borough and am the Deputy Leader of the Southwark Liberal Democrat Opposition Council Group.
I am an experienced campaigner and believe we must prioritise safe, affordable and secure housing for all. I’ve campaigned on other issues including support for small businesses, period poverty and electoral reform. I’ve brought together groups from multiple London boroughs against the disruptive Oceandiva party boat and championed the environment by planting trees, campaigning against pollution in the Thames and tackling the blight of litter and fly-tipping.
Interests
I’m passionate about the environment and at my happiest walking along the river or through cherished green spaces. I can be found pretty much every Saturday morning at the Southwark Parkrun running or cheering others on
