Labour Refuses to Back Campaign to Re-open Southwark Post Offices

Southwark Labour voted down an amendment on Wednesday evening, which would have led to the council campaigning to re-open community post offices.

The amendment proposed that the council campaign for the re-opening of community post offices across Southwark.

It called upon the council to acknowledge the loss of post offices that occurred in a wave of closures prior to 2010.

Labour voted down the amendment, which was tabled at a council assembly meeting.

Commenting, Cllr Graham Neale, the Southwark Liberal Democrat who proposed the amendment, said:

ā€œIā€™m extremely disappointed to see Southwark Labour fail to truly acknowledge the damage that these post office closures inflicted. Community post offices, many of which were closed during a Labour national government, provide vital services to residents.ā€
