Labour Let Down

Across the 5 constituencies that represent the Borough of Southwark, around 11,320 women are estimated to be affected by the pension age changes that the Labour government has recently refused to issue compensation over.

Earlier this year the Ombudsman ruled in favour of the WASPI (Women Against State Pension Inequality) campaign, and recommended that compensation be paid to those who were not aware of changes to the state pension age, which led to them not being able to adequately prepare for retirement.

However two days ago, 17th December, the Labour Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Liz Kendal stated that the Government would not be taking the recommendation forward.

The Southwark Liberal Democrats have written to their 5 Labour MPs representing the Southwark constituencies demanding that they back calls to reverse the decision, which has been branded a “shameful betrayal”.

Commenting, Liberal Democrat Deputy Group Leader Cllr Rachel Bentley said:

“This is a Labour government that has continued to make wrong decisions at every turn, and this is the latest in a string of let downs. For so many Labour MPs to back the WASPI campaign whilst in opposition, but then stay silent or even defend this shameful decision once their party is in power is nothing short of a betrayal. We’re urging our MPs to stick to their word and back the WASPI campaign for justice”
