Lib Dem group response to resignation of Southwark Housing Director

14 Aug 2023

In response to the resignation of Southwark Housing Director Michael Scorer, who just last month announced Labour's housing target was not going to be met,  Southwark Liberal Democrat leader Cllr Victor Chamberlain said:

"First and foremost, we would like to thank Michael Scorer for his dedication to Southwark Council over the past five years. His work in one of the toughest areas of local government in a borough with incredibly complex housing needs is appreciated.  We wish him all the best in his next chapter. We must not lose site that this Labour administration is failing on housing: The Council is 3rd worst in the UK for housing complaints, has been found at serious fault by the Ombudsman on far too many occasions and it's not building the affordable homes we desperately need.

Our Lib Dem group would especially like to thank him for his recent honesty on Southwark Council's inability to meet Labour's widely touted and now discredited housing target. This is the kind of transparency the people of Southwark should expect and deserve from their chief officers.

Southwark must now work as quickly as possible to replace Michael Scorer. We need a full time and dedicated Housing Director as soon as possible who can start fixing Southwark's numerous and major hosing crises. This is not a job another Director can cover for on a temporary basis. We hope that Michael's replacement shares commitment to honesty and transparency and will also stand up to Labour's political spin on housing."
