Liberal Democrat Councillor Secures Upgrade to Dangerous Borough Crossing
A dangerous crossing on Borough High Street that has led to near misses will now been upgraded and made safer thanks to intervention from local Liberal Democrat Cllr Victor Chamberlain.
The crossing, which is frequently used by primary school children from the nearby St Joseph’s Catholic School, had been noted by parents and Governers as being hazardous due to its location leading to the centre of Borough.
Highlighting recent near misses by cyclists and mopeds, they also raised the issue that there is no indication that it is a school crossing.
Cllr Victor Chamberlain, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Borough and Bankside, took up the issue with TfL, demanding that improvements be made to ensure that the young children who use it are safe.
TfL confirmed that the crossing is outdated, and until this point was not part of its modernisation programme.
However, Cllr Chamberlain has now had secured funding to upgrade the crossing from a Pelican Crossing to a modernised “Ped-X” crossing, which offer a number of increased safety features such as overhead detection, an elimination of the flashing amber phase, and a pedestrian countdown.
Commenting, Cllr Victor Chamberlain said:
“For too long this crossing has presented a major threat to hundreds of school children who use this every day. We need to be making it as easy as possible for children and parents to walk to school, but that can only be done when it’s as safe as possible to do so.
I’m pleased that I have been able to bring these improvements forward, and am thankful to local parents and Governers who first brought this issue to my attention”
