Liberal Democrats Celebrate Lower Road Wins After 12 Months of Chaos
Liberal Democrat Councillor Adam Hood has marked the anniversary of campaigning on Lower Road chaos, complete with a birthday cake and party poppers.
In a video released today, the Surrey Docks councillor shared that after a year of campaigning and meetings with council bosses, some small concessions have now been made.
Changes to the Plough Way traffic lights, and removing two parking pays to allow right-turning traffic to more easily flow have now both been implemented.
Responding to a question at council assembly last week, the council confirmed that changes to the flow of the Surrey Quays station gyratory, and further adjustments to parking bays were now also on the cards – both solutions championed by the Liberal Democrats for a year.
However the Liberal Democrats are now calling for a full review of the gyratory system, including flows on Old Rotherhithe Road, to be brought forward given the scale of the issues in the area.
The issue was first raised by Cllr Hood in November 2023, following reports of traffic jams for months since the works to implement the scheme had started.
Since then, residents and councillors have rallied to express their outrage at how the Council and TfL had managed the Lower Road scheme.
Commenting, Surrey Docks Cllr Adam Hood said:
“The progress made on Lower Road may have been as slow as the traffic, but I’m pleased that our ideas are now starting to be taken on board. There’s plenty more to do, but after a year of campaigning, it’s great to mark that anniversary with some good news. We’re going to keep up the pressure on both TfL and the Council, and won’t rest until the chaos has ended”
