Local Lib Dems Lead Fight to Save East Dulwich Post Office
Southwark Liberal Democrats have launched a petition to Save East Dulwich Post Office, which is one of 115 larger ‘crown branches’ that have been listed at risk of closure.
The planned closure of East Dulwich Post Office threatens to leave many residents without easy access to essential postal and banking services, which are particularly important for elderly residents and small businesses. As a commuting hub, it is also a vital resource for those who travel into the area for work.
The proposed closure comes after years of poor postal delivery services in the area, with irregular deliveries since the closure of the Silvester Road delivery office in 2018.
Cllr Victor Chamberlain has also written to the Chief Executive of the Post Office to urge a rethink.
In 2022, the Labour group in Southwark voted down a suggestion from the Liberal Democrats for the council to campaign to re-open community Post Offices.
Cllr Victor Chamberlain, Liberal Democrat Leader of the Opposition and Borough and Bankside Councillor said:
“The closure of East Dulwich Post Office would be a devastating blow to the area. This facility provides services that are indispensable to our residents, especially older adults.
“Asking people to travel further for basic services would place an unfair burden on some of the most vulnerable residents. I urge the Post Office to listen to the community’s concerns and keep this essential service open for the people of East Dulwich and the surrounding areas.
Richard Wingfield, local Liberal Democrat campaigner, added,
"People in East Dulwich have suffered from poor postal services in the last few years, with little improvement. To reduce postal services even further by shutting down a major branch is just adding insult to injury. The Post Office needs to think again urgently, and restore a properly functioning postal service to the area."
