The Southwark Liberal Democrats wrote to the council on Thursday asking them to speed up distribution of council tax rebates.

Internal correspondence revealed that some properties were only due to get the £150 rebate by the end of June.

Although this is ahead of schedule, the Liberal Democrats requested the council pay out all rebates in the first half of June due to the cost-of-living crisis.

Commenting, Cllr Victor Chamberlain, Southwark Liberal Democrat Group Leader said:

“This cost-of-living crisis is putting a vast amount of residents in the awful position of picking between eating or heating. Although it is a Conservative-created problem, we should be urgently directing all our resources to helping people struggling in Southwark. Speeding up council tax rebates is within our power and it will provide some relief to residents experiencing hardship.”
