Southwark Liberal Democrats Request King’s Arms Seating Review

The Liberal Democrats requested on Tuesday that Southwark Council look into its decision to remove outdoor seating arrangements at The King’s Arms pub.

The council ordered the London Bridge pub in May to take away outdoor seating, which it had in place since the covid pandemic.

It also requested that Coffeeshop Crol & Co, next door to The King’s Arms, do the same.

Over 500 people have signed an online petition calling for the council to reverse these decisions.

This outcry comes after central government announced, in the Queen’s Speech, that councils would be able to grant pavement licenses on a permanent basis.

Industry estimates put extra revenue from each outdoor seat at £6,000.

Commenting, Cllr Victor Chamberlain, Southwark Liberal Democrat Group Leader said:

“Amid this cost-of-living crisis, and post covid, we should be supporting local independent businesses and jobs as best we can. Pubs like The Kings Arms and businesses on Newcomen Street are integral to not only Southwark’s economy, but also its community spirit. The council should be encouraging new ideas that add to the borough’s culture, especially if it can make al fresco dining permanent. ”
