As Southwark Green Finance launches for its second round of funding, the Liberal Democrats have welcomed this step after calling for more ambition following the success of round one, but say that Labour are being far too timid when it comes to climate action.

The Liberal Democrats put forward Green Finance in a council motion in 2022, which passed unanimously. Following the successful launch of the first round of fundraising earlier this year which saw it quickly reach its target £1 million, the Liberal Democrats suggested that this demonstrated an ability to go much further than the original £6 million target the council set.

Commenting, Southwark Liberal Democrat Environment Spokesperson Cllr Graham Neale said:

“it’s great to see Southwark Green Finance progress to a second round, but the paltry sums involved is just more feet dragging from Labour on the environment. There’s a clear appetite to get involved with this sort of investment, so it’s a shame to see the opportunity wasted. We need to be much bolder – we simply can’t afford to continue to be timid when it comes to the climate emergency.”
