In response to the news that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has died, Southwark Liberal Democrat Group Leader, Councillor Victor Chamberlain, said:

"This is a deeply sad moment for the whole country and for many more across the globe. For over seven decades, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II dedicated herself to the service of the people of the United Kingdom, and was an inspirational figure throughout the world.

Many in Southwark will have personal memories of the Queen and we are proud of the fact that she often visited our borough, including her visits to Rotherhithe during her Silver Jubilee in 1977 and to Southwark Cathedral to see the Diamond Jubilee window in 2013.

At this painful time, our thoughts are with King Charles III and the entire Royal Family, as they grieve their personal loss of a mother, a grandmother and great-grandmother."
