Young Carers Action Day: Southwark Liberal Democrats Call for Action

On Young Carers Action Day (12th March), the Southwark Liberal Democrats are calling for action to support young carers in Southwark.

This comes a week before Council Assembly, where the opposition group are due to move a motion which would commit the council to signing up to the Young Carers Covenant – drawn up by Carers Trust and members of the Young Carers Alliance, it was launched on Young Carers Action Day in 2024.

The covenant is a commitment to young carers and young adult carers. It sets out ten key outcomes that young carers from across the UK have said are key to improving their lives.

The motion also criticises the Labour government for kicking the care crisis “into the long grass” with a review due to conclude in 2028, and the local Labour administration for refusing to back the Liberal Democrats’ plan to fund the full implementation of integrated neighbourhood teams which would bring together health and care agencies to offer seamless support.

Cllr Adam Hood, moving the motion said:

“Young Carers Action Day is an important opportunity to recognise and celebrate young carers, with this year’s theme making sure that we remember that young carers are young people first – and should not miss out on their childhood.

I’m really pleased to be able to support the campaign by calling for Southwark to sign the Young Carer’s Covenant, and hope that next week we succeed with our motion.

I'm proud that locally and nationally, the Liberal Democrats are leading on the care agenda”
